Civilian companies have taken over many of the military buildings on the old RAF Upper Heyford air base, but there is still a time-warp strangeness about it.

With its lumpen concrete shelters, bunkers, and early Royal Air Force buildings, the place is almost eerie—and so it should be.“It is spine-chilling,” said Dr Andrew Brown of English Heritage, “in the thought that it was from here that the end of the world could have started.”English Heritage has declared the former RAF Upper Heyford to be Britain’s best-preserved relic of the West’s long Cold War against the Soviet Union. But its military history goes back further than that.
